What is Social Prescribing?

Because health is about more than just medicine.

Sometimes, the best thing a doctor can "prescribe" isn't found in a pharmacy. It’s a walk in the park with a new group of friends, an art class that sparks joy, or a community gardening project that gets you moving.

Social Prescribing is a way of connecting you to local activities and support services that improve your health and well-being. It is encapsulates more holistic frameworks for healthcare, recognising that our health is shaped by our social lives, our environment, and our sense of purpose.

How it works

The Conversation: You talk to your healthcare professional about what’s really bothering you beyond medical symptoms, whether it’s feeling lonely, stressed, anxious ect...

The Connection: You are introduced to a Link Worker (a wellness navigator). They listen to what matters to you.

The Prescription: Together, you create a "social prescription", a plan that connects you to local groups like sports clubs, creative workshops, or volunteer programs.

“The root cause is finally addressed.”

Social prescribing looks beyond symptoms to the whole person.

Advocating for Social Prescribing in the UAE

An Initiative for Healthcare Innovation

In a nation that moves as fast as ours, staying healthy means more than just a doctor’s visit. It’s about how we live, connect, and thrive together.

  • Building a Connected Nation: We turn a diverse population of residents into a single, supportive community. By connecting neighbors through shared passions, we make sure nobody feels like a stranger.

  • A Modern Reset: Life in the UAE is high-energy. Social prescribing offers non-medical alternatives to help you manage the stresses of modern life.

  • Vision 2031 in Action: We aren't just treating illness; we are building a legacy of happiness. Our work directly supports the UAE National Wellbeing Strategy, shifting the focus from "fixing problems" to "fueling wellness."

Our Work

We are building the UAE’s first ecosystem for social prescribing: unifying experts, conducting ground-breaking research, and starting the conversations that matter.

Community & Advocacy

We host talks in schools and local hubs to remove the stigma around social health. Through our Podcast Series, we’re bringing these vital "one-on-one" conversations to a national stage, showing how social connection transforms lives, scientifically.

Research & Evidence

Mirroring the UK’s successful foundational model, we are publishing early-stage research to define social prescribing within the UAE context. This work culminates in the National Social Prescribing Round Table later this year.

The Expert Network

We unite physicians, academics, and students to advocate for a shift from a purely biomedical model to a holistic one. Our network is designing the regional framework to ensure community and social wellbeing become vital components of patient care

Ways to Engage

We cultivate spaces for dialogue and learning. Whether you are a student exploring new ideas or a professional sharing expertise, your voice strengthens the movement for community health.

For Students

Join Students for Social Prescribing (S4SP), our dedicated branch for the next generation of health advocates. S4SP operates at a community level, empowering students to lead collaborative projects, explore social determinants of health, and champion a hierarchy-free approach to wellness.

For Educators

We partner with academic institutions to integrate social prescribing into the classroom. Through guest lectures and low-pressure wellbeing workshops, we help communities widen their perspective on the vital link between clinical medicine and social connection.

For Professionals

Join our network as a mentor, researcher, or clinical collaborator. We facilitate a high-level exchange of knowledge between the student body and established healthcare leaders to bridge the gap between traditional medicine and social care.
